Uterine fibroids are benign, noncancerous growths that grow in the muscles of the uterine wall. It is also called fibroid tumor or migratory fibroid. It often appears during the childbearing years, is not associated with an increased risk of uterine cancer, and almost never becomes cancer.
What are The Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids often cause no symptoms and are discovered during a routine pelvic exam. However, women may feel some signs and symptoms if these tumors are present, such as:
- Heavy bleeding outside your period or a change in the pattern of your menstrual cycle
- Pain in the pelvic area or back
- Pressure or discomfort in the pelvic region
- Inability to completely empty the bladder
- Increase in the size of the uterus
- Constipation
- Difficulty getting pregnant
If the uterine fibroids are large or cause any of the above symptoms, it may be necessary to conduct the necessary tests and an accurate diagnosis. You may need to have an ultrasound of the uterus or surgery to remove the polyp in some cases.
What is The Size of The Fibroids?
Fibroids range in size from the size of a seed to huge masses that can distort and enlarge the uterus. A single fibroid or multiple fibroids can appear. In extreme cases, multiple fibroids can enlarge the uterus so much that it reaches into the rib cage, causing weight gain.
A woman may not know she has uterine fibroids because they often don’t cause any symptoms, and a fibroid doctor discovers them during a pelvic exam or ultrasound during pregnancy. Therefore, we recommend that you see a doctor when you feel any of the following symptoms:
- Pelvic pain that does not go away
- Heavy menstrual cycles or long or painful periods
- Bleeding between menstrual cycles
- Difficulty emptying the bladder
- Unexplained low red blood cell counts (anemia)
What is The Treatment For Uterine Fibroids?
Treatment for uterine fibroids depends on the size and type of tumor, as well as the symptoms it causes. Here are some of the treatment options available for uterine fibroids:
- Symptom control: Doctors can prescribe medications to control symptoms caused by the tumor, such as heavy bleeding and pain. Among the drugs used in this regard, there are anti-hormonal drugs that limit the growth of fibroids.
- Surgery: In cases where the tumor causes severe symptoms or affects the pregnancy, surgery may be required to remove the tumor. Surgery can include removal of only the tumor (myomectomy) or removal of the entire uterus (hysterectomy).
- Laser therapy: A laser may be used to remove small fibroids. This method is non-surgical and does not require a long recovery period.
- Cryotherapy: A cooling technique can be used to remove fibroids. This method relies on freezing the tumor and destroying it using cooling.
- X-ray therapy: X-rays may be used to destroy fibroids. A small piece of thin tube is inserted into the uterus, then X-rays are directed at the tumor to destroy it.
Please note that these treatment options are just the general options available, and the appropriate treatment depends on the patient’s condition and the treating physician’s diagnosis.
